Chapter Twelve

I sat in the diner down the street from The Nugget. I took another long drink of my chocolate malt before looking at my watch. Wendy was late.

I tapped my fingers on the table, exhaling. Sure enough, after talking with Mrs. Jeffries at The Hang, I’d felt sick over her words and had a fitful night. I knew that I had to tell Wendy. I would explode if I didn’t

If she’d only get here . . .

As if on cue, the glass doors of the diner swung open as Wendy came tumbling through. She raced over to my table as quickly as her stilettos would allow. “Sorry I’m late.”

“You should be,” I snapped more sharply than I intended. “I have some big news, and you’ve made me suffer waiting for you.”

Wendy motioned to my nearly empty malt glass. “Doesn’t look like you’ve been suffering too terribly. I think I’ll take one of those too.”

I forced myself to wait as Wendy flagged down a waitress and ordered a chocolate malt and French fries.

“Okay, so what’s this big news?” she asked, settling back against the plastic cover of the checkered booth.

I took a deep breath before answering in a low voice. “I saw something last night at The Hang.”

Wendy rolled her eyes. “So did I and I never want to see it again.”

“I’m not talking about Ginger and Graphite dancing on the stage. Would you listen to me, Wendy?”

Wendy held up her hands in surrender. “Okay, relax. What did you see? A hot guy? A cool outfit?”

“No. I saw Mrs. Jeffries.”

Wendy blinked at me in confusion. “Wait, what? When?”

“Do you remember when I went to the restroom just after getting our drinks?”

Wendy nodded.

“I wasn’t using the restroom,” I said. “I was following someone in a neon-yellow hoodie I’d spotted across the room.”

Wendy laughed. “Mrs. Jeffries would forget to ditch the neon colors even when she’s trying to be incognito.”

“You’re still not listening to me, Wendy. I have to tell you what she was doing there.”

Wendy shrugged. “So, tell me.”

I rested my elbows on the table, lowering my voice even further. “She was spying on Graphite.”

“What’s the big deal? That’s why we were there too, isn’t it?” Wendy became fully absorbed in her milkshake as the waiter plunked a large order of fries and a bottle of ketchup on the corner of the table.

Usually the thick-cut house fries would make my mouth water, but right now my stomach felt sour due to my disturbing thoughts about Ginger. Or maybe I’d just gulped down my malt too fast. Either way, the fries held no appeal. “Yes, we were there to spy on Graphite. But Mrs. Jeffries brought up something I hadn’t even thought about: if Graphite was involved in Dale’s murder, that might mean Ginger is in terrible danger.”

Wendy set down her milkshake, coughing. It was a moment before she composed herself enough to speak. “You can’t be serious. Besides, you know Mrs. Jeffries. She’s always saying whatever comes into her head.”

“That’s what I thought at first too,” I said.
